India today is recognized as one of the fastest developing countries in the world and some of our visionaries can be commemorated for the success and development of India. One such renowned visionary was our honorable founder Karumuthu Thiagarajar Chettiar. Way back in the 1920’s, when most Indians only dreamt of having a decent job, “Karumuttu” as he was fondly called, had a vision of creating several hundreds of jobs.
He established a textile mill which went on to become one of the most blooming empires around the globe. Our chairman was also instrumental in getting Texas instruments to SONA Towers in 1984. SONA Towers is the origin of IT in India and one of the most important landmarks in India’s Silicon Valley Bangalore.
He also realized the need to create educational institutions of higher learning and setup Thiagarajar Polytechnic, Thiagarajar Engineering College, Thiagarajar College of Arts, Thiagarajar Preceptor College, etc. His astounding work and fervent efforts were recognized by citizens of India and they conferred him with the title of Kalaithanthai (Father of Education). Karumuttu’s dedication and relentless efforts helped him to achieve various commendable milestones in his lifespan. In 1960’s, his path breaking ideas led him to seek Japanese gurus to use their technical expertise to create systems, quality, procedures and processes.
His foresight led to the establishment of the Bank of Madura to have strong financial foundations and it is today recognized as one of the biggest private banks in India.
His strong beliefs in democracy made him channelize his energy towards the cause and hence he joined the Indian National Congress. He established a close rapport with Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru and several other great leaders. He supported Gandhiji in his quest for freedom and in fact the famous “lion cloth” incident took place while Gandhiji dwelled at Kalaithanthai’s home in Madurai. Inspired by Gandhiji, he too abandoned his shirt for life without realizing that in fifty years, he would be one of the world’s biggest textile manufacturers.
